Magic
Magic is an inherant part of this world. Practicing spells and similar things can be done through RP alone. For situations that have a potentially more serious outcome, we have coded a magic system which works as follows.

There is a master spellbook. This book is broken down by years and provides a description of the spell, a code by which you can 'cast' it, the incantation (if any), and an amount of damage points which will be deducted from the victim's HP if the cast is successful.

If two players begin to duel, one or the other will cast a spell. The success of the spell is determined by several factors. The first is dexterity... did you manage to pull out your wand without dropping it. The second is memory... did you manage to say the incantation correctly and did you remember the correct gesture for that spell. The third is level of the spell as compared to year of the caster. This is NOT to say that you can not successfully cast spells above your year.. it does however mean that it will be harder for a first year to cast a third year spell than it would be for a fourth year. Into this mix is thrown a random factor to account for the insane things that life sometimes throws at us when we aren't looking.

If the cast comes up successful, both caster and victim get a message and any damage points are deducted from the victim. The message will say that the cast was successful and detail the spell for the victim. It is then the victim's post and it would be expected that he/she make their pose a suitable acknowledgement of the spell being cast on themself.

If the cast fails, again both are notified, this time of failure and reason for, and it is the caster's post. He/she is expected to make their pose a suitable acknowledgement of the spell failing.

Possible reasons for failure: lack of dexterity, lack of memory, difficulty of spell, random factor. The caster will be told the reason so that it can be worked into the pose.
