Writing Style On MU*s, text is the medium through which you interact with your fellows. Therefore, matters of style are important! Reading a desc that has faulty spelling, grammar, and punctuation can make you look rather silly. So don't be afraid to use a word processor offline to write and then paste it into your client. Doing this also gives you the chance to back up your character's desc in case something goes wrong with the database. Descs are best written in the third person (Any sentence that contains the words "you" or "I" is not written in third person). Nothing is more offensive to some players than to 'look' at a player and read: "You look deeply into <name's> eyes and fall instantly in love." While we may believe in love at first sight, this sort of thing is a sort of power-play - it takes away other player's abilities to decide how they would respond to meeting your character. Not to mention the fact that falling in love would not be the appropriate response for everyone who looks upon your character. It is not advised to include information about moods or actions (like: Noting your attention, <name> makes his way across the room towards you.) Anything that would not always be appropriate can be out of place. What if <name> was in surgery and his desc indicates that he break the sterile field and greet whoever walked in the room? That's rather silly, don't you think? Don't give in to the urge to have your character be the most perfect person ever seen. In a MU* loaded with people such as this, a body gets bored! Please make your character realistic, with good points as well as bad. It makes things more interesting and gives your character room to grow! CREDIT for this entry goes to Kendra of HPHE |
